Where to stay in Bologna as a first-time visitor

Bologna is small enough that almost anywhere works, but the right neighbourhood still changes your trip. Here's an honest look at the two areas first-time visitors actually choose between, and how to pick.

A brick church with arched portico and a tall bell tower stands at a street corner in a city, with clear skies above and cars parked along the road.

Where should you stay in Bologna?

Most first-time visitors end up choosing between two areas: Centro Storico, the historic centre, and Navile, the district just north of the train station that includes Bolognina. Centro Storico gets you the postcard version of Bologna on foot, towers, porticoes, Piazza Maggiore, all within walking distance. Navile gets you a quieter, more local neighbourhood, noticeably better value, a few minutes further from the centre but closer to the station itself.

Neither is wrong. It depends on what you're actually optimising for: maximum immersion from the moment you step outside, or a calmer base with an easy walk into the action.

Centro Storico: the classic choice, with a catch

Centro Storico is Bologna's historic heart, and it's genuinely one of the best city centres in Italy to stay in. Piazza Maggiore, the Two Towers, the university quarter and the Quadrilatero food market are all within a short walk of almost anywhere here. For a first visit built around sightseeing on foot, it's hard to beat, and for couples wanting a romantic, walk-everywhere weekend, it's the easier of the two areas to justify on atmosphere alone.

The catch is one most guides skip over: ongoing tram construction along Via Indipendenza, one of the centre's main streets, has been disrupting parts of the area through 2026, with noise and detours in places. It's not a dealbreaker, Bologna is still Bologna, but it's worth knowing before you book if you're hoping for a perfectly quiet stay right in the thick of it.

What about the Quadrilatero food market?

The Quadrilatero is the small grid of medieval streets just behind Piazza Maggiore, packed with butchers, cheesemongers, fresh pasta shops and tiny bars that have been trading for generations. It's less a single market and more an entire neighbourhood built around food, and it's worth an hour of wandering regardless of where you're staying.

If you're based in Centro Storico, you'll likely pass through it without trying. If you're based in Navile, it's a flat, easy walk in alongside everything else, and arguably more enjoyable arriving with an appetite rather than living on top of it.

Navile and Bolognina: Bologna's most underrated base

Bolognina, part of the wider Navile district, sits directly north of Bologna Centrale station, and it has a reputation locals will happily confirm: more multicultural, more lived-in, and noticeably cheaper than the centre for food, drink and accommodation, without losing the things that make Bologna worth visiting.

It's also more convenient than the postcode might suggest. The Social Hub Bologna(opens in new tab) sits on Via Aristotile Fioravanti, a few minutes' walk from Bologna Centrale, which puts you closer to the station than almost anything in Centro Storico, useful if you're arriving by train or taking day trips to Florence, Modena or Parma. Piazza Maggiore itself is a flat 20 to 25 minute walk away, or a short bus ride if you'd rather save your legs for the rest of the day.

The neighbourhood has its own genuinely good food scene too, Mercato Albani is a relaxed local market with several food counters, and it's a fraction of the price of eating in the most touristy stretches of the centre.

For solo travellers, this is usually the smarter base: cheaper, quieter, easy to navigate without a map, and close enough to the centre that you're never more than a 20-minute walk from anything you want to see. For couples on a tighter budget who'd still rather spend the savings on a proper dinner than a fancier hotel room, the same logic applies.

How do the two areas actually compare?

  • First time, sightseeing-focused, don't mind noise: Centro Storico
  • Want better value without sacrificing convenience: Navile / Bolognina
  • Arriving by train or planning day trips: Navile / Bolognina, you're a few minutes from the platform
  • Want to fall out of bed onto Piazza Maggiore: Centro Storico
  • Travelling solo and want an easy, walkable, less touristy base: Navile / Bolognina

A few practical tips for first-time visitors

  • Public transport tickets cost around €1.50 ($1.65) and cover both bus and tram, buy them before boarding from a tabacchi or ticket machine, not from the driver.
  • Climbing the Asinelli Tower, Bologna's tallest, costs around €5 ($5.50) and is worth booking a timed slot for in advance during peak season.
  • Tortellini in brodo and tagliatelle al ragù are the dishes to actually order here, Bologna is the home of both, and a sit-down lunch with a glass of Lambrusco typically runs €15 to €25 ($16 to $27) per person outside the most touristy spots.
  • If you're flying in from the US, check our guide to the new ETIAS and entry rules for Americans(opens in new tab) before booking, the same 90-day Schengen rule applies here as anywhere else in Italy.

All prices converted at the June 2026 rate of €1 = $1.13. Rates fluctuate, so check closer to your trip.

Bologna rewards a slower visit more than most Italian cities. Wherever you base yourself, leave room to just walk the porticoes without a destination in mind.
